Chapter 4

Jenna began to relax as soon as they started to drive away from the general store and the feeling of her dad’s eyes watching her from the window.

She liked the fact that Riley was a careful driver, for a guy of action, as he obviously was being a Navy Seal he was also very cautious and safe.

“So if we talk about your work I guess you’ll then have to shoot me?” she laughed as she asked the question.

Riley burst into laughter, “No, it’s not quite that secretive. I can tell you certain aspects but obviously, I can’t discuss certain exercises with you. You know what though Jenna? ”

“What?” she smiled at him happy in the knowledge that she’d made him laugh.

“Can we not talk about work today? I spend all my leave talking about it with my folks and I don’t want to do that with you,” he said quietly.

She felt flattered, “Sure. Can you tell me where we’re heading?”

“Back to Salem as there’s a delightful restaurant on the coast there, unfortunately Salem Willows is closed this time of the year, as they’ve got great amusements there,” he smiled as he spoke and she could see he was just a big kid at heart.

“Sounds great,” she replied as she stared out of the window at the passing scenery, it was so good to escape Laconia for the day as it wasn’t often the opportunity arose.

“You look beautiful today by the way I meant to say it earlier but I thought it might embarrass you with your dad there,” he said.

She smiled and looked at the ground awkwardly, “Thank you and yes I’d have been embarrassed, more so than I am now.”

“Shit sorry Jenna, something tells me that you’re not used to receiving compliments,” he said.

“Not really no,” she said quietly as she looked toward him. Was this really happening? She felt as though she were in a dream, a hot Navy Seal liking her and better still considering her as beautiful.

He went quiet as he concentrated on the road in front of him and then whispered, “Well I for one think that’s a shame as I see you as truly beautiful.”

She smiled, “Well that’s a good thing because I happen to think you’re incredibly hot!”

He blushed, “Now you’ve embarrassed me!”

“Oh come on you must receive millions of compliments,” she cheered at him as his soft lips began to smile.

“Oh yeah millions Jenna!” he said in a sarcastic tone. “I get a few yes but they all seem empty somehow. Girls see that I’m in good shape, learn that I’m a Navy Seal and that’s it they want to jump in bed with me and not get to know me at all.”

“Must be terrible!” she joked, but she could see he didn’t find the topic particularly funny. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to upset you Riley.”

“It’s cool honestly, I just get a bit pissed off at times, my mates think it must be wonderful having all these girls literally throwing themselves at you and sure to start with it is but then you feel empty,” he explained.
